About
Araminta

Araminta has worked in primary schools both as an art therapist providing children with one-to-one support, and as the therapeutic lead. She has experience working with adolescents both individually within mainstream education, and in group settings within a multi-agency service.

Araminta sees art and play as powerful, age-appropriate, and natural forms of self-expression for children and adolescents, especially as there is so often no suitable vocabulary for lived experiences. The focus in this approach is on meeting the child where they are, rather than imposing expectations. Working within metaphor can also feel safer than direct communication, while engaging with tactile and sensory materials can facilitate processing at a pre-verbal level. Other rationales for incorporating art and play include the view that the act of creation itself can boost self-esteem and foster a stronger sense of identity, and that overcoming the inherent challenges of art making can build resilience and a sense of mastery. Finally, stepping back to reflect on the finished work with an understanding 'other' can open up new perspectives on the world, oneself, and others.

Having run therapeutic art groups in a treatment centre for addiction for over 14 years, working with children affected by addiction is a particular area of interest.

Araminta’s overall approach is guided by attachment theory, and trauma informed therapy.
