What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Individuals with ADHD may struggle with organisation and time management whilst exhibiting restlessness and trouble concentrating. The condition often emerges in childhood and persists into adulthood, affecting academic, occupational, and social functioning.

How can Portobello Behavioural Health help?

We work alongside psychologists and psychiatrists as appropriate to provide practical support alongside any medication regime that is in place. Through therapy or coaching (or a combination of both) we have an excellent track record of helping develop better coping mechanisms, improve social skills, tackle time management issues and address co-occurring disorders.

Our approach is always sensitive and led by the tolerance of the client.  This means that sessions will often start shorter for either therapy or coaching and build up over time. Through regular check-ins and ongoing accountability, we can support clients to better understand their condition and implement strategies that help them cope.

How does it work?

Depending on what services we recommend the next step is a formal assessment either with a clinical psychologist or a member of the therapy team.

Some common questions about ADHD

Do you accept medical insurance?

We do not accept medical insurance.  In some instances, clients are able to reclaim the cost of our services from theirinsurance companies but we do not deal with insurance companies directly. If additional information is required by a client in making an insurance claim an administration fee is payable.

How can you support someone with ADHD?

Approach the situation with as much empathy as possible and make sure you educate yourself about the condition. Encourage open communication, support the development of structure and routine and try to be flexible and non-judgemental. Doing all this alone can be difficult so try to seek out local support or engage a professional service which can both support you and the person with ADHD.

Do you do online coaching?

Yes. We are able to support clients online. This works better in some instances than other, usually depending on the presentation and the person involved. Get in touch and speak to a member of the team and options can be discussed.

Do you do therapy online?

Yes. We have a number of therapists who specialise in working with clients online. Get in touch and we can match you up with the most suitable member of the team.

Do you provide confidential support?

Discretion and confidentiality are our bywords. We protect our clients confidentiality rigorously and have processes in place to ensure that information is safeguarded. We pride ourselves on our discretion. Our flexible approach to support means that we can often work with clients in a way which suits their needs for privacy.

Do you have a coach who suits my lifestyle/background/sexuality/gender/age/ethnicity etc

We have a wide range of coaches we work with from a whole range of backgrounds. It is rare that we are not able to find a match that suits our clients. If a client is particularly nervous we can arrange a free introductory meeting to see whether it will be a good fit before starting to work with someone.

Does PBH follow a particular treatment approach or modality?

The way we support clients is flexible as we recognise that different people are at different stages in their road to wellness. We do not advocate or prescribe a particular modality but do recognise that clients who are engaged in self-destructive behaviours often need to be supported to stop or minimise the behaviour in order for their recovery to progress. However, we also acknowledge that this is not a linear process and as such lapses are frequent and we are adept at dealing with them.

How much does therapy/coaching/case management cost?

The prices for our services vary depending on what is required. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements and we can explain what PBH can provide and how much it will cost.

Where are you based?

We operate from two offices, one in London and one in Guildford, Surrey. However, we provide support to clients across the world through case management, coaching and therapy. This may include remote or online support or it may mean our coaches travelling to clients in their home country.
