What is depression?

Depression is a mental health disorder characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities. Life can be challenging, but when our sadness is persistent it can add to signs of depression. It can affect a person's thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and relationships and leads to physical and emotional problems. Left unchecked it prevents people from living their lives to the fullest.

How can Portobello Behavioural Health help?

Therapy is a proven effective way to help people with depression. Therapists can help individuals to identify and address the underlying causes of their depression and negative patterns of thinking and behaviours and work with the client to develop positive and adaptive ways of thinking, as well as develop sustainable coping skills to manage symptoms.

Engaging in therapy allows the individual to become educated, which can reduce feelings of shame and self-blame. By working with a therapist individuals can manage symptoms and improve their quality of life. In some cases, medication can be required to help people begin the process of recovering from depression.

We work with several doctors and psychiatrists who we can refer to if necessary. Coaching can also benefit people with depression helping individuals move forward and achieve their desired outcomes. Coaches at PBH work in collaboration with other providers such as therapists and psychiatrists to ensure every client receives comprehensive care that meets their needs.

Some common questions about depression

Do you accept medical insurance?

We do not accept medical insurance.  In some instances, clients are able to reclaim the cost of our services from theirinsurance companies but we do not deal with insurance companies directly. If additional information is required by a client in making an insurance claim an administration fee is payable.

Do you do therapy online?

Yes. We have a number of therapists who specialise in working with clients online. Get in touch and we can match you up with the most suitable member of the team.

How can you support someone with depression?

Encourage the person to seek professional help. A diagnosis by a medical professional is the first step to understanding what solutions are going to work for the individual. This may include medical interventions, therapy or a combination of both. Approach the person empathetically, encourage open communication and offer practical support where possible. Patience is required, depression can take a long time to overcome and recovery can be complicated and slow.

Where are you based?

We operate from two offices, one in London and one in Guildford, Surrey. However, we provide support to clients across the world through case management, coaching and therapy. This may include remote or online support or it may mean our coaches travelling to clients in their home country.

What do I do in an emergency?

Dealing with mental health problems is turbulent and characterised by repeated crises. PBH is not an emergency service. If you find yourself in a situation where someone needs medical assistance or there is an imminent danger you should call emergency services. If the situation is contained and you require rapid response in the form of case management or coaching please get in touch.

How much does therapy/coaching/case management cost?

The prices for our services vary depending on what is required. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements and we can explain what PBH can provide and how much it will cost.
