What is sex addiction?
Sex addiction involves individuals engaging in long-standing compulsive sexual behaviours. Individuals may experience intense sexual fantasies, desires or urges they cannot control. This can result in excessive or risky sexual behaviours, compulsive masturbation, excessive pornography use or frequent and anonymous sex, which becomes an increasingly out-of-control need over want. These behaviours can harm oneself and others and if ignored can become the main focus of people's lives, leaving to the detriment of everything else.
How can Portobello Behavioural Health help?
Therapy can help to address compulsive sexual behaviours and explore the underlying factors that contribute to these, such as life events, past trauma, anxiety, or relationship issues. In therapy, individuals can learn specific coping strategies to manage urges and complex feelings and help to rebuild relationships and establish healthy boundaries to create a supportive environment for recovery. Through behavioural health coaching, individuals can be helped to identify triggers, manage impulses, and set achievable goals. Coaching provides ongoing motivation, support, and guidance for clients as they work towards recovery whilst helping individuals establish a sense of purpose beyond their addiction and develop sustainable routines. Importantly a PBH coach can provide ongoing regular motivation and accountability, helping individuals stay on track with their recovery. Clients are supported by working with someone who understands their situation and that there is no judgement.
